Olds is a small town in Alberta that has many of the amenities of a larger town, including big box stores, sports teams and a college. Just 38 miles south of Red Deer, this town is located in Mountain View County. Olds is extremely easy to find because of its position at the intersection of Highway 2A and Highway 27. Since 2008, Olds has seen major growth thanks to major retailers, such as Walmart and Canadian Tire, setting up shop. This lively town is also home to Olds College, which is well known for its fashion retail and agricultural programs. As of 2014, the town of Olds has a population of more than 8,600 people, which shows a slight growth from the 8,500 who lived there in 2013.
The town was first established in 1890 when the rail line finally reached the area. The city was originally going to be named Shannon after the section foreman David Shannon. However, Mr. Shannon refused, and the name was changed to Olds after traffic manager George Olds. The town has continued to grow, and now it offers a number of great attractions. Olds features more than 100 acres of parks, green space and playground area.
