Dundas is a small town on the western shore of Lake Ontario. This proximity to the lake meant that it sat along an important trade route, which is one of the reasons that many of the first settlers came in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The city was officially incorporated in 1847, and the Great Western Railway built the first train station in Dundas in 1864. In 1930, McMaster University was founded in the neighboring town of Hamilton. As a result, many new residents associated with the university moved in, and some of them were affiliated with the arts community. Today, you can visit any number of small art galleries, catch a show put on by the Dundas Valley Orchestra, or hone your own musical skills at the Dundas Conservatory of Music.
The Dundas region is known for its interesting topography. There are numerous peaks, the most notable of which is Dundas Peak. Nearby the Peak are two waterfalls, Webster's Falls and Tew's Falls. They can both be accessed from the Bruce Trail. Within the hills and valleys of Dundas sit a number of farms. The farmers bring their produce to a farmers' market that runs every Thursday from June to October in downtown Dundas.
